Knowledge Building communities in an international context
Knowledge Building (KB) is the production and continual improvement of ideas of value to a community through collaborate inquiry, which is fundamental to progress and development of the human race and is becoming ever more important as we move into the 21st century. KB as a model of learning, first advocated by Scardamalia & Bereiter, has gained increasing interest and support from teachers and researchers around the world for over a decade. In Hong Kong, a great deal of advances has been made in developing KB pedagogy in schools. In particular, a community of KB teachers (the knowledge building teacher network, KBTN) has made significant advances in developing a model of professional development support for scaling up curriculum and assessment innovation in schools, and in establishing sustained inquiry in collaboration with a network of knowledge building classrooms across five continents. The keynote, plenary and parallel sessions under this subtheme present the various advances as well as challenges of adopting KB in different learning contexts.

Learning through technology and 21st century skills
To foster the development of 21st century skills such as the abilities to tackle open-ended authentic problems, identify own learning needs, collaborate, communicate, evaluate information derived from different sources, monitor own progress and develop creative solutions has become a prime educational goal as well as a major rationale for integrating ICT in the school curriculum in many countries. Do we have evidence that use of technology in the school curriculum leads to these learning outcomes internationally and in Hong Kong? What are the conditions for success in developing 21st century skills in students? These questions are explored in the parallel sessions and final plenary for this subtheme.
